Default push button start help

Hi, folks!
Hopefully, this will make sense I have a 99 xj 2.5 that i am letting a carrier make payments on. The had problems getting it to start and decided to replace the battery, cables and also the push button for starting it. It still wouldnt start, they towed it home. I went over to look at it and somethings been changed for sure. Theres a wire going straignt from the push button to the positive post on the starter and one going straight from the other side of the push button to the little terminial on the starter. I tried looking under the dash to maybe see if something obvious was disconnected but the previous owner who wired the push button in has everything black taped like a vault. Can anybody give me some insight please on how the starter relay gets wired in please? i appreciate your time.

It should work the way it's wired. In a pinch, you can activate the solenoid by using a piece of metal, such as a wrench, to connect between the large post the cable is connected to and the small terminal that the wiring is connected to. A fuse should be used to prevent a short from burning the wire. If there isn't one, it's possible someone got lucky and shorted the wiring and burnt through the wire without causing a short. Or the starter solenoid is gummed up, which you can disassemble and clean. A test light or multimeter will tell you everything you need to know...
