Yes, I know it is an old thread but it came up on my search for this too. Nobody had a picture of what sits by the brake booster, below the clutch reservoir, on a 1996 XJ.

Although not on an XJ, I've used a universal firewall boot before. It requires a fairly large hole (1.25") but it can be customized to allow quite a few wires through.
Also, passing wire through existing grommets in a firewall can be a pain in the butt. I made few tools out of brake lines and old screw driver handles which sometimes make it a bit easier.
