Now that I look at it when i'm not half-asleep, you don't need the diode. You'll be fine as long as you don't power the switch from 12V power.
Just for reference next time, the diodes won't fail if you get proper 12v ones with the correct amp rating. Also if the moon turns pink and they DO fail, they wont conduct at all and not harm the system. Same with relays.

Then this is what you need:

I did it with one relay and one 3 position switch on my jeep. I've never had a problem and I think it's right? I have a 3 position switch left pin is tapped into the reverse light power, middle pin is the signal out to the single relay which powers the reverse light bar, and the right pin is a switched 12v signal from my cigarette lighter. Used a similar concept for the front light bar, but used the high beam for the left pin. I don't see why this wouldn't work fine? Cost a few bucks for a relay and I already had the 3 position micro switch.

It's probably due to the "related threads" feature of the site. Like the name suggests, you get a list of related threads below the thread you are reading. It's very easy to inadvertently reply to one of them, instead of the thread you were reading, and meant to reply to. It doesn't mean you are an idiot, it means the feature is poorly done.

You can turn this feature off in your profile. I don't remember exactly where it is, but there is a setting for it.

If this were my forum, it would be turned off permanently for everybody. It would not even be an option.

Haha I think I did, for whatever issue this was - yeah, makes sense that this would be the related threads feature - often I do find some useful info there but looks like this time it bit me
