86 MJ t-case
Alright guys I picked up a 1986 2.5l 4-speed 2wd MJ for $100 what transfer case will bolt up to the ax4 tranny? Would a np231 bolt up or a t-case out of a samurai? Both are readily available. Thanks in andvance! V8 and auto trans are in the future but way down the road
You need a 4x trans, TC will NOT bolt to your AX.
You'll want an AX- 4 or 5 from a 94+ XJ or from a Wrangler........with TC and linkage and you'll need Xmember and NEW master and slave and trans mount.
86 is a completely different animal.........not sure you even have an AX.........look that up.
Don't know where you are but good AXs are getting damn near impossible to find.
Check your gears in the rear....match to front. If 4.10s you'll need a D30 that ONLY came in the 2.5 XJ or MJ...........or you'll have to regear.

BTW.......
You do have an AX4. I was thinking BA10 but that came behind the 6cyl not the 4cyl.
What you do have is the 86 bell with the external slave on the right side, not the left side like the '94+
So, you can keep your bell, master, slave........but you'll need a 4x trans and TC.

Only downside to the AX-15 swap is the first gear is higher. Great for the 4.0 but takes more effort out of the 2.8 and 2.5 to get moving, unless you regear the axles.
