Its not bad. Just get new clutch parts for the 96 trans. Everything but the flywheel should be replaced, at least thats what I did when I swapped out my puke-goat for an AX.
You may have a 21 spline (input) transfer case, in which case you'll want the 23 spline input tcase off the 96. Output is the same across the years.
The cross member should be used from the new trans as well. The bolt holes in the sub frame are in different locations as the AX is a tad longer, and wider (not a problem at all). The holes for both transmissions/cross members are already in the subframe, at least they were on my 87.
You may wanna sye the tcase and replace the trans to crossmember mount, I didnt replace mine so i had to do some of the work twice.
The tcase linkage is also slightly different. You'll have to adjust the linkage if you can. Mine was completely fubar, so I have to manually shift under the truck at the moment. It really, really blows.
I'll be clocking my tcase and doing a custom linkage to simplify things.
There is probably stuff I'm forgetting. There is a write up somewhere around here, or pm me with questions. I'll do my best to help.

I just put a nv3550 in mine ...the 89 if it is will have a much smaller pilot shaft whish is a direct fit for the pilot bearing that fits renix . But still gotta have 23 spline case . the 96 will have the external slave which is more desireable however still gonna need the 23 spline case and a conversion pilot bearing . also different clutch master and slave setup .

I bought an 89 (built in late 89) for $500 with the trans.
I took what I wanted, sold what I could, and scrapped the rest.
I even had the AX rebuilt before the swap.
Still about broke even. Find a XJ thats totaled if you can. I found mine on CL.
