Default Transmission Fluid Capacity

Got some quotes today to change the transmission fluid that supposedly lasts the “life of the vehicle”. Couldn’t find anywhere cheaper than $500 to do it.

I’m sitting at around 108,000 miles right now and figured I’d just do it myself since I have to install new CV Axles. I might lose a little doing that and since I’m gonna be sitting there with the wheel off I may as well just put some fresh fluid in. Looked up a couple videos and it doesn’t seem very difficult.

Problem is that because it isn’t supposed to be changed according to Jeep, they don’t give you official fluid levels. I have a 2015 3.2l Latitude with the 9 speed transmission and cannot for the life of me figure out where that info is.

Anyone changed their transmission fluid recently and knows how much has to go in it? That Mopar 9 speed stuff is expensive and I’m not trying to buy more than I have to.

I changed mine and it took about 3.5 quarts. There are youtube videos on how to do it. I drained it in a pan and then measured the fluid that drained out and put that amount back in.

I have a 2018 Cherokee KL Overland 3.2L V6 with exactly 110k (easy) miles.

I was on the fence whether or not to do this transmission service - I decided to do it yesterday while rotating my tires so I'll share my experience for what it's worth.

I bought the vehicle new, drive it (mostly) very gently, and I have had absolutely no issues whatsoever to date and thought the transmission was running just perfectly so far as I could tell.

I put the car up on jack stands, removed the tires, and opened the fill/check plug through the driver's side wheel well (it was 'nearly' impossible for me to get at) and then, like others, extracted almost exactly 3.5 quarts out of the drain plug.

Fluid was very dirty.

I replaced with 3.6 quarts of the recommended 8/9 speed Mopar ATF, fired it up, and ran it back and forth from Park to Reverse to Neutral to Drive and back a few times - allowing 10-15 seconds in each position.

I put the tires back on and took it for a drive. I was absolutely stunned at the difference - it shifts way, way, WAY smoother than before and I thought it was shifting really gently prior to the refill.

Since I have 2 Quarts of unopened ATF fluid, I will buy 2 more and add this to my 150k service to further flush out the old fluids.

I highly recommend doing this and was absolutely amazed at the results...

I believe the unit holds 6.35 quarts, but it is hard to extract it all with a dump & fill.

ATF is Part #68218925AB.

There is also a special tool to check the fluid level (I got mine from Amazon: look up "#10323A") and you need to know the fluid temperature when checking.

* Be sure to buy the 'Anodized low-carbon steel (black)' and not the (white) one, as reading the tool is VERY easy with the 'black' one and nearly impossible with the 'white' one...
