Default Trans-diff

Hey guys whats up well when i bought my jeep it had 120,000 miles on it. and now i have a little over 130,000 i want to change the trans fluid and diff fluid but also if i change them out it mite turn out for the worse. If it has never been done before it mite actually be doing more good if the metal shavings in there with the old fluid mite keep be keeping it together. So if i get rid of the old fluid it will be really clean and can cause some slipping or something. But yea i just want to know if i should change the fluid out or not??

I would definitely change the fluid, but don't flush it. Just do the trans filter/gasket and put however much fluid back in it, don't do a trans flush. It will be fine.

As for the fluids, I have a thread right below this one where I'm asking about the types of fluid and all.

X2 no flush just a fluid change. If you are really worried do a poor mans fluid change. Just unhook the lines going into the radiator and quickly decide which is in and which is out. Put a 5 gal bucket to catch the fluid coming out and a container with fresh fluid on the intake line. Run the engine at idle until the fresh fluid is in. Turn it off. When finished with all the fluid that needs to be taken in, put the lines back on the radiator and recheck the level of ATF. If it is a little low then top it off.

I'm talking about running a cleaning agent through the trans. If you think your Jeep hasn't been serviced in over 50k miles and the trans is still shifting fine, then just do the fluid and nothing special. If you clean all the gunk out of the transmission then it may start to slip. It happened to my Ford truck and thats why I'm not flushing the trans on my 170k mile XJ. Just speaking from personal experience. If you have kept up on the maintenance for the last 80k miles then by all means, flush it, its good for it.

Bought it with 185,000 miles on it. No idea of it's history. Maybe a fluid change will do just fine! Thanks!!

I would atleast change the filter too on the tranny. It can be a PIA fighting the dipstick but atleast you could filter some of the gunk you left by not flushing it.

And stir up some more gunk that is resting comfortably in the pan. Good idea. At least the pan will be spotless.

If you have the pan off to do the filter change, wouldn't you clean the pan out...

Definitely change the filter and clean the pan. Always do those, whether your flushing or not.
