My wifes 2016 with the 3.2 has had this failure light of the auto shutdown/restart system. Gives an amber A inside of a circle. happens intermittently after driving 5 to 50 miles with no apparent correlation to speed or distance. If I turn off and restart it goes away for some random amount of time. My obd2 reader shows no codes on a general scan with the light illuminated...not sure where else to look. All other parameters seem normal...thanks

How old is your battery? Have it load tested at one of your auto parts store(Pep Boys/Auto Zone), usually free. With ESS start & stop the batteries are only lasting 3/4 years, some as little as 2 years.

I second that the ESS battery may be on its way out. Not sure if that would be under the P/T (Powertrain) warranty of 5 years/60k miles, but if it is, you might be able to get another one free of charge.

ok, starts normal every time...the light comes on at 60 mph after 10-50 miles...cant see the battery not charged at speed . Is there no way to confirm why the light comes on? my obd 2 reader shows no faults/codes. must be some way to find the fault besides throwing parts at it but thanks

The OP asks for help - then ignores what is recommended. The problems he says he has can all be caused by a bad battery, the state of charge is meaningless. He was asked when it was last replaced, is it an AGM type? To find out if it’s the battery all he has to do is to visit an auto parts store like AutoZone and have them load test the battery for free. No “throwing parts at it”, just a way to find the fault. There could be other causes, but the battery is the most likely culprit.

BTW there is no ESS battery in the KL.

The Jeep will also disable ESS if the battery voltage is low, or it senses the battery is hot. In fact, some of the Grand Cherokee guys hate it enough to disconnect the battery temp sensor to disable it.

my 2018 rubicon does the same thing, from time to time, for the last year. it will ding the chime, and a message will show up on my drivers display, saying stop/start disabled or something like that.
it doesn't bother me, i figured i would just tell the dealer next time i'm there. or trade it in, but i'm waiting on the 392.
