Default 4wd Service light 4wd unavailable

Hello everyone, I have a 2015 trail hawk I just got a couple months ago. It has been a great vehicle thus far. I live in Michigan and I am a morel mushroom hunter and wanted a trail type vehicle. I was up in the trails yesterday which are just some sandy 2 track and gravel roads. I did not beat on the car in anyway and nothing went wrong while I was hunting. On my way home when I was on the express way I got a ping and it was the 4wd service light. It came on and went off after about 5 minutes then randomly pinged again about 30 min later. The really weird thing is if I drive around town I don’t get the light or the ping at all. Today I had to make a trip to the next town over and sure enough after cursing at about 70 it pinged again and when I made it to my stop turned it off came back turned the car back on no light, until I hit the expressway for the trip back home. Seems really strange to me. Any input would be appreciated. I will have an appointment for the dealer but if I can fix it I’d like to do it myself.

The first thing to do is check the battery and clean/tighten the battery connections. It's not intuitive, but a poor battery connection will cause all kinds of weird error messages because the voltage drops low enough during cranking that some of the computers will crash or not startup correctly. In my case it was the random 4wd error about 5 minutes into the trip, steering system errors, and the body control computer crashing so the door locks didn't work and the windshield wipers would not turn off (needed to pull the fuse to get that to reset). Cleaned the battery connections and it all magically fixed itself.

Ok I will try that. There was definitely a lot of dust and sand kicked up on the roads and 2 tracks. I was also going to try looking at the fuses also. I try and do most things myself but with it only happening during high speeds I didn’t know where to begin on that but I will try this.

It might not be your problem, but it's easy to check.

You might also see if you can trigger it by changing the 4wd modes. In auto, it has the rear engaged up until about 45mph. Putting it in snow will keep it engaged. That's how I confirmed the rear driveshaft was the source of my noise as I could cause it to come and go at speed by changing modes, and pulling the 4wd fuse eliminated the noise altogether.
