Just picked up a 96 Cherokee sport mostly for the winter because my main car is a bmw 335i which I would rather not have sliding around in the snow and ice. My jeep has 136,xxx on it and runs good. I just had to replace the high pressure power steering hose which wasn't too bad of a job. I am about to change my oil and every other person is telling me something different about what oil to use.. I know this is a welcome thread but feel free to give me any tips on keeping this old girl running.. Thanks!

 

Yep, LOL. there is lots of opinions about the oil. I use Quaker State 5w-20 High Mileage Dino oil. I have 8000 miles on that. Don't know about the first 192000 by the PO or PO's used. It's working well for me, seems to be cleaning up sludge. I have opted not to use Synthetic or additives.

Synthetics typically have more cleaners and such, running a round would help clean out that sludge and such. Run it for 500 miles then change oil and filter. That is, if you are needing to clean out sludge. That'd be one of the better ways.

I've also heard of people using power steering fluid. Putting a capful or so into the oil and running it for a bit. I've never done it, but have been told by more than one ASE certified Toyota master mechanic that it works. I'd do some serious research before attempting this, as I'm sure if done wrong could cause some serious damage.

I have owned numerous AWD cars in the past. 04 Volkswagen R32 and a 08 Subaru STi and they get very boring quickly. RWD is just down right awesome. The way the car handles and responds is totally different, I have so much more fun driving now..
