Newbie,Researching 2 mnths early
HEy Guys. Jose Here from Rahway Nj. Just had to let go of my Chevy cobaly due to my financial situation and work slowing down. Im glad because i had only purchased the cobalyt when I lived 120 miles away from work and the gas was killing me, but now I live closer to work and i can get another truck.
My last truck was a Ford full size bronco with 2 inch lift and 33s.
I have always wanted a jeep wrangler but with 4 kids a 2 door cold vehicle is not a smart choice.
I am starting my reasearch on jeep cherokees, I have noticed that they are not as popular as wranglers therefore I can get more bang for my buck.
Questions. I think i can get a great deal on a grocery getter and lift it myself.
What are the largest tire that will fit nicely without a lift kit?
How much body lift can be achieved with messing twith the steering yoke?
Being a six cylinder what is a good loud exhaust system?
i am not into serious offroading although It was my hobby when I had my ford.I cpould care less about gas milage but I want a sturdy tire that will have good traction on and off road.
Thanks for reading this insanley long post ,but I am really excited to be part of the family.

What are the largest tire that will fit nicely without a lift kit? you need a lift to really fit any sort of a tire under an XJ
How much body lift can be achieved with messing twith the steering yoke?
Being a six cylinder what is a good loud exhaust system? no body lift its a unibody jeep so no frame

I agree.
buy a newer one, and look over the bottom of it VERY closely. your situation seems to point out that you want it reliable, and I'm betting it would be a great thing to have zero rust.
30" tires fit stock, but will rub a little bit. I can make 33's fit stock and have the jeep look good with some fancy flare work, but then backspacing and bumpstopping will limit any flex.
I'd put a set of 31's on it with a cheapo rough country 3" lift. do not buy a rusty's lift, you will regret it despite what all of 2 or three people in the world will say.
but, all in all 31's are what you'd want to shoot for, and I suggest getting a 4.0 automatic for ease of driving, power, and comfort. you will enjoy these little jeeps ALOT

Welcome...
No body lifts... It's a uni-body vehicle. You can't seperate the body from the uni-frame.
Like most things... if you want the better riding, better handling, better built lifts. Its going to cost you more. Trying to go cheap in the beginning just costs more later fixing all the bad, unsafe or incorrect things.

I guarantee you I could remove the body from the unibody rails
it just would fold like a taco...

I would say my mechanic ability is a bit better than a beginner. I rebuilt 5 Honda goldwings from wiring to replacing gears, Only thing is we are talking about a heavy vehicle and no more garage. Ill have to shop around for parts and see what mechanic / has the best labore prices.
I apprciate the warm welcome form all who responded . I see Jeepcomj begs to differ on this unibody dicussion!LOL
Im gonna shop around. If I can fit Jeep and kit into my budget then I will But it seems like $1500 + to raise her, and I think that cash will be better spent on buying lower milage right now.
When i Bought my Bronco . I was lucky. The lift was already in and I just needed new tires.
In any Case I am able to fit it into my budget, What should I look foward to in means of work. Not too detailed, Maybe a post I can read or some website with that info.
I own only metric Hand tools,Harbor freight is not too far from home so Purchasing SAE wont be the deal,Its more of the lack of lifts presses and so on.
