from what I understand there's a few different axle options I could have, so I was wondering how to find out definitively what I've got under the Xj. and also, I've read that there's a couple different gear ratios I could have. How can I figure out what axles I have and what gears are in them?
Take a picture of them. Most likely stock danas unless the previous owner changed them. If its geared the only way to figure out would be to remove the carrier and count the teeth. There is a chart that shows you different axels. Stock gears I think are a 3.7? Correct me if I'm wrong fellas. Give me a sec to find it.

yeah I'm sure they're stock. I HIGHLY doubt that the PO swapped axles.
So I'm guessing just a dana30 and a dana35 but isn't there a chrysler 8. something I could have out back?
and I think I read something about there being a dana30 or a dana30c?
man the dif fluid was just changed. I'd hate to open up the diffs. isn't there a way to count the tire rotation vs drive shaft rotations to figure out the gearing?

Most are 30 up front and 35 in the back. The younger ones have the 8. In not sure about your gearing idea regarding rotation. The Dana C a lot of the Danas have C stamps on them because they are unfinished from chrysler but the older axels do have clips in them along the teeth that do have to be removed if your taking the axel apart. Certain years usually the older ones.

yeah tell me about it. I'll probably do that at work tomorrow if it's slow.

another question for y'all. I searched but didn't find anything definitive, but how involved is it to swap the front grill and so on from a 97+ model? what all would you need? are the fenders, hood, and headlights etc different, or could i just get my hands on the grill and headlight surrounds and swap it over?
