New XJ
I just purchased a 99 xj today, it came with full exhaust a rough country 3 inch lift some lights and a roof rack. Im pretty new to the jeep world. I owned a 90 wrangler back in california but not for long so i really didnt care to learn about it since i had it for about a month. Has a few minor problems that i can fix but the one question i was wondering about was the front end. 4x4 works good and all that stuff but when you go over bumps fast or ruts in the road it just feels like its loose under there. He told me he just replace ball joints front u joint and tie rod ends within 15k miles. Im going to get it looked at tomorrow by the local 4x4 shop but was wondering if anyone knew what it could be. I was also looking for some good advice on somethings to get to get some more articulation out of it. so far i want to get a quick release sway bar and some armor for it. Bumpers etc. The only place i really know of on where to get stuff is quadratec so if there is some websites out there that specialize in xj stuff please let me know. I look forward to meeting new people and learning new things.

You can lay under it and have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth and watch the steering linkage for any play. Also check the control arms and their bushings for any signs of damage of excessive wear; the shocks for any loose/missing mounting bolts or fluid leakage; and grab the trac bar and see if it has any play in it.
Loose hub bearings can cause the issue, but they'd exhibit noticeable noise.

Sounds good ill look into it more. Took it out wheeling a little so far. pretty impressed. I def need some sway bar discos though could have used some more flex. I was searching and i was reading about people ditching the whole rear sway bar setup. Now how will this handle on the road if i were to say through a trailer back there with a couple 4 wheelers or something.
