Hi All! Thanks for the add. Just bought this ‘86 2door. VIN says it’s a Laredo. Curious about the sticker package. I know I’ve seen it before, but I can’t find what it’s called. TIA

Welcome.
Nice looking Jeep.
I poured over my parts catalog and did not see anything like that.
Amazing how many different types of decals were on the older Jeeps.
Pinstripes on different parts of the Jeep in different colors etc.
Speaking of which is that a decal or paint?

hi and welcome from just the other side of sudbury.
can't say i've seen that sticker package before, but being an 86, things were different back then. nice score tho, good looking jeep, and being an 86, there's not too many of that era left around anymore, and yours looks to be in great shape for the year!!

i would suggest keeping it undercoated every year, as i'm sure it's been done so far, you just don't see them in that shape anymore.

cheers.

Welcome from Newmarket. Your XJ looks like it has a few features of the Limited model which didn't appear until 1987. The badges on the side appear to be gold and if so may have been added later, possibly when the black stripes were put on. The gold wheels would be from a Limited and the running boards look like they might be as well. The sun visor looks like it might be a Lund is sought after by many XJ owners. I don't know if the paint is original but if so I don't think Laredos had colour coordinated flares whereas Limiteds did. Anyway, it all looks good and I'm sure you'll have fun with it. Love the 2 doors!

btw - what engine do you have in it?

Awesome Man! Thanks for the info! The paint looks original, but the VIN pops up Laredo so I’m not sure how I’d confirm the Limited status 🤷🏻‍♂️

it’s got a swapped 4.0 in it. Not sure if I’m going to keep it automatic or switch to manual as well. I believe it’s the original transmission.

Good news re the 4.0 litre engine. If it is an '86 it would have come with a straight 4, V6 or a diesel so you're better off now. I'm pretty sure that the Laredo came out in '85 and the Limited in '87 so I think anything that looks "Limited" on yours was probably added by someone later.

or it's an 87 that's been re-titled as an 86? with everything you've noticed, as well as having a 4.0L "swapped" in... i thought it was tough to put a 4.0L in, since you would have to move the firewall back some. it was way easier to swap in a 4.3 or 5.0 into those.
but who knows what someone is willing to go through.

my 90 pioneer had colour matching flares, and my 92 laredo had black flares. so not sure just how they did that. but i know my limited had colour matched flares...

interesting idea. Would they be able to change how it comes up on the VIN? That’s where the ‘86 comes from. As well as the Laredo distinction. I understand Jeep is pretty lax on its records pre ‘98 so I’m not surprised by the lack of info.

I wondered if it might be an '87 too. Regarding Limiteds, I have an '89. The previous owner said that he stripped all of the gold off of it (badges, etc.) and I thought he had. About a year after I got it I noticed hints of gold on the rear of the valve cover. I don't recall them coming with that (I considered buying one in 1990 but went for a Laredo instead) and I don't have any references so I don't know if that is original or not. It would have been a nice detail back then if it was.

@Siah ... It might be a long shot but is any part of your valve cover gold?

I know you can get Jeep build sheets on line for vehicles that are about 2000 and newer. For older ones I've been able to get a print out from a dealership parts department. If you haven't it might be worth looking in to ... although I've seen some mistakes in them too.

I’ll have to check when I get it back in the same province. The previous owner was pretty certain the motor was not original, but maybe the donor was a Limited and they took the badges etc. Is this what you were thinking?

Anything is possible with regard to parts swapping but as @caged said putting a 4.0L in would be a big one and it would have involved a lot of electrical, fuel, exhaust, etc. changes. I'd want to be sure it's an '86 for starters. If you're going by your ownership, I know the MTO has made mistakes (year, model, V.I.N., colour, etc.) when entering vehicle data.

Not a certain way of knowing but do you have leather seats (Limited) or vinyl with fabric inserts (Laredo).

vinyl with fabric. I thought they stopped using the pop out rear windows on the 2drs after 86 as well, which would be a stranger thing to change backward, no?
