I always join a new forum for every project I get. Previously I had a 1986 4Runner 22RE, 6" lift on 33" KM2's. It was a lot of fun, but I needed the money so I sold it.

Now I'm looking to get back into offroading and I wanna try an XJ. Toyotas are great, but parts are expensive, and so are the trucks. For half the price I can get a decent 4.0L XJ and get it locked and lifted. I've got about a dozen to choose from within 100 miles of me, but I'm not sure what year I should go with. I know the 87-95 are probably going to have fewer electronics to fail. There are some 96-98 in my price range as well, but the only real merit I can find to them is the 8.25" Chrysler rear end, which I'm sure I could find at a yard easy enough and swap in. No luck finding a stock D44 XJ yet. What kinds of things should I look for? And what should I avoid (other than obvious problems)?
*addition* I plan on looking at an '89 XJ tomorrow, and the only issue the owner mentioned was that it starts and runs fine, but when you take your hand off the key it shuts off. He went on to say you can run a wire from the battery to a fuse under the hood and it'll stay running fine. I'm thinking ignition switch, but any input would be helpful
