Default new to me 99 cherokee

well i have never owned any jeep before and i needed a winter vehicle so today i traded my 75 vw beetle (needed restored i was only looking for 1500 out of it) for a 1999 jeep cherokee straight six 4x4 auto tranny 176,000 miles

frame is solid
rust is very little
it has 31 inch tires on it
and a 5 inch lift with less than 2000 miles on it

at first i was not particularly fond of the trade that the guy offered me
because i know it will suck gas and i am not a fan of auto trannys
but the tranny does shift smooth and i figured that this thing has got to be worth 3000 at least

i dont know if i want to keep it or not but i will at least keep it around for the snowy season...so she's got a snowy season to prove herself as to wethor i will keep it or not

ok so the whole XJ/MJ/ZJ/WJ thing
what does that mean and how do i know what mine is

is there anything anything in particular i need to know about these vehicles?
common problems and fixes?
simple easy cheap performance mods?
how can i verify the lift is truly 5 inches? (last question may sound dumb but im a car guy not a truck guy)

thanks
jared

Just a quick correction, WJ is for Grand Cherokees 99-04. Wranglers 87-95 are YJ, 97-06 are TJ.
