Theres plenty of threads here for what your looking for but for quick reference stay away from 84 to 86 they used a 2.8 GM v6 worst motor put in the cherokee then 87 they put the 4.0 inline 6 in awesome motor with a great automatic transmisson its called the AW4 its not the same as the grand cherokee they use a 42re dont let people tell you the cherokee has a crappy tranny it doesnt back on track 87 to 90 was called a renix edition which i believe was a french injection system its good but alot of vacuum lines 91 to 96 was the high out put 97 they updated the interior and the outside 97 to 99 are good years late 99 to 2001 have a problem with the head cracking jeep also put 5 speeds in the jeeps the 87 to 89? used a puegot BA-10 5 speed not a great tranny mid 89 to 93 was a new 5 speed called the AX15 internal slave cylinder its a good tranny it was behind the 4.0 it was used until 99 beggining in 94 they switched the tranny to an external slave cylinder 2000 and 2001 used a nv3550 also a good tranny jeep also put a 4 cylinder in th e2.5 with a manual tranny that tranny was a ax5 look up what i wrote on here it will tell you every thing about it

Welcome!! I'm in Michigan myself, and this forum has saved my butt and taught me more about cherokee's than any other resource except getting under mine and doing the work and getting the experience myself. I browsed this forum for months learning about jeeps and absorbing the raw information on them before having one. Now I've had mine for over a year, have a 4.5 inch lift on it, and countless other things I've done to it. Good luck on your journey!
