Default New to Jeep and new to 4x4!

Hi,
I am the new owner of a 1990 Cherokee

The catch is that the transfer case had blown while the old owner was driving down from Idaho... I purchased a np231 from a 1990 Wrangler manual and mine is a auto but from what i read it should fit... (i hope). So i will be installing it on Friday and hopefully everything works out!

I am new to any sort of off road vehicle so i am very excited to get my hand dirty and learn some new stuff.

Here are some pics:

Not bad for 500 bucks huh!

I will post some updated pics after it runs and i can wash it, it hasnd moved from that spot in about 2 years until last night when i towed it to my buddies shop.

Welcome to the site!! that transfercase is the same as long as both the jeeps had the same engine... Also it will be clocked differently when u install so itll either hang lower or high i forget which... I think high so u may spend some time beating the floor with a hammer to make room... If the xj is a 4.0 and the wrangler was a 2.5 then the spline count on the input rod will be different...

Again welcome to the site and best of luck!!

thanks guys!

The Transfer Case off the Wrangler is a 4.0 as well. Does this mean i can just throw it on without changing the splines? What spline is the one i count? and also do i have to crack it open to do so?

thanks

The splines youll count when u get the old transfer case off... Coming out the back of the tranny... The transfercase you can count with it off... But there are only 2 in 90 and they are 4.0 or 2.5 so if both were 4.0 they should be the same... However like i said your bolt pattern to bolt it on is gonna be different... Put a jack under the cross member and lower everything... Youll be able to get to it all then... Bolt on the new transfercase and then make adjustments to the floor to get the crossmember back up all the way to bolt it again...

So i was doing this all day yesterday and it was a pain in the ***!

So the one i bought had a different "nose" on the rear part of it. I didnt count the spine but they did look different so i swapped the insides from my old one to the new one and everything seems fine.
Changing gears in it seems close to impossible. When it was open i moved the selector and it did move normal, but once its closed it seems to be very hard. I put it on hoping that once the linkage is on i will get more leverage and it will be fine but the linkage is about 1/4 inch to far from the selector to connect it.

The worse thing is that the ujoint cap fell and all the pins got messed up. Is there a trick to put them back on?

In this picture you can see the new transfer case in the trunk of the jeep.

I dont know if its clear but this is what i was talking About long nose...

Any help will be awesome since im going at it today too.

Thanks alot

If I were you, since you have it all apart and your spending the day under there replace all the up_joints with new. They aren't expensive and depending on the millage on them it would be a good preventative investment
