Hey guys, new to XJs and new to this forum. As my username suggests, I am an owner of a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Briarwood. Also, I am the owner of a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Briarwood. I had the whole story of how I ended up with 2 Briarwoods in a 12 day span but it logged me out, i refreshed the page like an idiot and lost it. In the pic the 92 is right and the 91 is left. I've always loved XJs and I needed a vehicle to soldier its way through my remaining 3 years of college so this was a perfect chance to get into them for real.
Basically, I looked at the 1991 in central VT first and it backfired through the intake and couldn't make it up hills. At idle though it would cough back only below 1300-1500 rpm or so then it would run like a peach. I had to pass though because I couldn't get drive it home. Then a few days later I drove to Allentown, PA and bought the 92 on the spot. Later that week a family friend with a truck and trailer offered to go to VT so of course I jumped on that. The 91 has 115k and the 92 has 123k. Picked them up for $850 and $1650 respectively. Even drove the 92 230 miles home in NJ rush hour on 287. Talk about getting to know a car...
Brief list of issues with each:
91-
Backfires through intake, much worse going up hills can't even get up most
tranny and/or tcase leaking
Weird aftermarket brake system bypassing ABS
windshield crack
power locks and seats don't work
exhaust mounts need to be rewelded
power steering hitches/catches
What I've done so far: Full synthetic oil change, new fuel filter and ignition coil. Seemed to marginally reduce backfire. I've got a crankshaft position sensor ordered so we'll see how that goes.
92-
Lots of suspension knocking
Lifter noise
Exhaust leak
yanks to the right when making quick stops
parking brake doesn't work(turning out to be a much bigger problem than anticipated)
rusted rockers and passenger quarter(everything else is decent)
Ripped headliner and driver seat
Bent rear bumper and hitch
FILTHY interior
