New guy from SoCal - Still shopping
I thought say hello to the members of this fine community. My name is Dustin and I live in southern California. These XJ's have always just kind of jumped out at me.
So, I've decided my next vehicle is definitely going to be an XJ! However, at the moment, I'm still shopping for the one I want. I probably won't make a move until after the first of the year, unless I come across an amazing deal that is. I currently have a 2000 Lexus GS300 as my daily driver (still love this car) and I have a 1992 Eagle Talon TSI as my toy, which I drag race.
I'm really into my DSM as are some of my best friends, have been building/racing these Damn Splendid Machines for quite some time now. So far I've got the car to run a 10.97 @ 126mph in the 1/4 mile and make about 550hp to all four tires. So if any of you know about DSM's, I'm no slouch when it comes to putting in work on my vehicles. "DSMs: Turning ordinary people into cussing, tool chucking, alcoholic mechanics since 1989."
While I still love getting sunk into my seat when the turbo spools on my DSM, I've realized I need something that is a bit more versatile, and my lexus sure doesn't fit the bill in that department. I tend to go on spur of the moment road trips, sometimes in snow, sometimes on long dirt roads.. So the first thing that came to mind for me was an early 90's Cherokee. Such a great platform, bullet proof inline 6, plenty powerful enough, pretty solid drivetrain, 4x4, comfortable, acceptable mpg's, just an all around tough SOB; so I've made up my mind.
I really joined this site to get a feel for the most typical problems these older xj's experience, so I know what to look for and expect. I'm already planning on going through the whole truck, all maintenance items, fluids, belts, hoses, tune up, etc. I don't want to have to worry about it leaving me stranded if I jump in and take a 300 mile road trip. I'm looking for a good deal on one, which seems like it won't be hard to find, I've seen a lot of good candidates for sale that are less than $3000. I'm not going to go crazy rock crawler with the thing, probably just a coil spacer/leaf 2"-3" lift, bigger tires, roof rack and front bumper. The end goal I have is to make it a reliable, purposeful built vehicle I can have a good time with.
Thanks for reading my novel and I look forward to researching through the forums!

Welcome to CF. Good luck finding a cherokee you like. There are many for sale in California, so you will eventually find one you will like. Check CL everyday and your cherokee will appear. Good luck.

Welcome to the site. Good luck shopping and be careful of the instant addiction as soon as you get into the drivers seat.
