Default new guy in Minnesota

Hi guys,
I live in Minneapolis. Last fall I drove out to Colorado (in my Acura Integra) to do some climbing. As I discovered, many of the roads to trailheads in the Colorado Rockies are pretty rough. A few of the roads that my guide book said would be passable for passenger cars would have seriously damaged my car if I had tried to go up them.
I'm planning to go back this spring, and this time I would like to have 4x4 to drive up some of those roads. I don't feel like renting; I'd rather be driving my own rig. I'm considering buying a used Cherokee (early/mid 90s) for not a ton of money. From what I've read, these vehicles have a pretty good reputation for reliability, and they can be had for fairly cheap if you're not scared of a high-miles vehicle.
What should I be watching out for if I go have a look at some of these bargain Cherokees on the local craigslist? (I should mention I'm pretty knowledgeable about cars, and have done many of my own car repairs through the years). My intent is to find a decent one, use it for the trip, and re-sell later. I'm happy with my Acura.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for any advice.
-Peter

Welcome from TEXAS. You should ask that question and others in the Cherokee Chat section to get the answers you seek.

Welcome, from MI.

Well you have the usual list of things to look for. But there are a few threads of what to watch for in the XJ chat forum. Just do a quick search.

Good luck, and you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did a search and already found some useful info. I think that there are undoubtedly some good buys on craigslist (for inexpensive but well-used Cherokees), but then again there are some pretty flaky low-lifes on craigslist too looking to scam people and sell off their defective cars without disclosing the problems. Do you guys ever take prospective vehicles into a shop for an inspection before buying? I wonder how the average craigslist seller would react to such a request?

It is your money. If they don't like the suggestion then walk. A reputable seller will not mind you taking it to a mechanic. But you should definately buy it and stick around here.
