Default New to 4x4

Hello,

My family and I have recently moved into much more woodsy areas with fun places to travel, hike and camp. NJ has a few areas that I am not so comfortable bringing one of my low cars through such as the Sugar Sand roads that many historical and preserved Forests might have.

In order to kill two birds with 1 stone, our son will be driving soon so we decided that we would look around for a proper 4x4 Suv that would become his first vehicle, while always using it for these "off-road adventures" that we do so very much want to be involved with.

We will not be looking for a Rock Climbing rig, just something not too small to fit the whole family and camping gear and a gas can.

So how did I end up here?

Many months of research, but it is now go time. We are discussing a 2003 Jeep WJ with Select Trac.

But I need advice, hoping to find someone here who is willing to talk with me about this.

I was originally under the impression that we would want the 1999 and 2000 WJ with Select Trac as it doesn't have the modern silly Traction Control. Mostly because our biggest issue would be Sugar sand and general muddy areas etc.

Any help appreciated!

Far in the future, my wife and I are a bit more adventurous. Once the kids are out of the house I think the two of us would look to build something a bit more Climb and Overlanding worthy.

Best advice I can give you on a WJ is to get one with the 4.0 and the selec trac transfer case. Avoid the V8 WJs, that 4.7 v8 is garbage.

From what I have read and heard I agree. We have been strictly in the 99-04 with Selec-trac.

It seems anything else could have trouble in sand if you were not perfectly careful.
