Default May buy a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, but need advice

Hi, first time writing, but read many threads. I am looking to buy this 1999 Jeep Cherokee, but really could use some advice. First I'd like to know if the 1999's have any consistent problems. The jeep I'm looking at was bought from a dealer and the current owner has had it for 4 years. He doesn't know how to repair cars, so he just decided to sell it. It is a funny blue/purple color. Is that a factory color? I couldn't tell what color it was supposed to be looking at the id in the door. It has some rust in spots on the roof. I thought that was odd. It has terrible rust on the driver's side seat bolts/metal, but not so much on the passenger side. Lots of rust underneath, but the exterior doesn't look so bad. Just one obvious spot on the passenger side door. Seat belts don't retract well. A/C just worked on and in good condition. Heater, ok, power windows ok, FM doesn't work, but AM does. Has cruise control. The 4WD seemed ok, but the owner said it probably needs work. The major concerns are replacing the stabilizer bar and u joints. My husband is pretty good with Jeeps, but he's asking $900.00 and that's a lot for us. It has 125,000 miles on it. The seats have cracks in the vinyl, stains on back seat, not real clean. The owners were not smokers, but they had a dog they carried in the back once in a while. It didn't blow white smoke, thank goodness. I just don't like all the rust underneath. Any advice would be appreciated. I am going to try to CARFAX it. Thanks so much.

Welcome to CF from COS!!

Post some pics of the rust. If it is surface rust, it's NBD, if it penetrates the metal it is a BD. Pics would help a lot!!

Thanks for replying. The rust doesn't really look that bad. It just looked odd being on the roof top. I think we will break down and buy it. Still I look at so many complaints on autoworld.com. Wow, that website really lists well, the 1999 had over 450 complaints. Have you heard of Jeeps jumping out of gear into reverse and rolling? Thank you again.

A Jeep, like all other vehicles, is a mechanical device that can and will fail. They just need their regular check-ups to run %100 operational...

Default My Thanks

I would like to thank you all for your replies. They have helped. I think I would like to buy it. We have till Monday to decide. I just keep thinking about the drive shaft. It just seemed like rust was all over it. My husband said that I should look at our other jeeps and I am going to crawl under them today. Like anyone, I just hate parting with the money. LOL

Again, thank you all so very much for your help and God bless you!

i know what position your in i recently bought a jeep that the previous owner had in ohio on and off for three years (6 monthes in ohio and the other 6 in nc) luckly mine only has surface rust on the axles, the underside is in very good shape as well as the inside. the only actual rust hole is a bout the size of a quarter in the trunk where the previous owner drilled through the floor board to mount a 10 disk cd changer, but i can have that fixed easily so i am not worried hope that helps you
