Absolutely...and I agree. But it is also your own fault in responsibility if she doesn't turn out to ride as well as you thought she would after you made this decision and now have no right to complain.

Choose wisely in the beginning.

The purpose of a lift kit is two-fold.
1.) Increase the available ground clearance.
2.) Improve axle articulation.
3.) Vain attempt to compensate for shortcomings and/or stamina in other more social areas.
Both combine to greatly improve offroad performance and reward the user with more trail options than what a stock vehicle is capable of navigating.

FIFY!

Not really necessary unless it's purpose is extreme off road only use

Welcome dude/dudette!

Thanks for all the insight from everybody, and I actually already saw the video above
That being said... If the stock suspension was in better shape I would absolutely roll with it for a while. BUT... if I am going to have to replace things might as well upgrade to my liking. It's not something I think "I need X amount of lift and X size tires to be able to do X"
It seemed to me that a 3" lift was kinda standard/basic around here and although it may not be "necessary" it just seems to me to be a waste not to do it since I am going to do suspension replacement anyways...

Safest method is to just replace everything that is highlighted with the pretty colors, because cheap=dangerous.

I knew about the lower control arms and tie rod's from reading but I wasn't aware of all of the other details. Is some items overkill or is it a necessity?
Don't get me wrong I want to and will do it right, it is just new information that I wasn't aware of from reading...
THANKS!!

On another note... Where is a good place to shop for oem rated leaf packs and front coils? Like I said I'm not dying for a lift, just weighing options at this point.

If it's all 17 years old might as well save the time and just replace everything. Adding a little more to the the list:
Upper & lower ball joints
Unit bearings
Axle shaft u-joints

Welcome dude/dudette!

Great example! I was doing similar conditions yesterday with mine. Like I said, it is great to see moderation for a change like the OP stated in his first post here. With full respect to our forum vendor and supporter, we really do tend to forget what these can actually do right out of the box

Never said the XJ was not a capable rig in stock trim, in fact I've told many new members here to wheel their rigs stock and then upgrade based on what they learn and the type of terrain they plan on spending the most time on.

Dirt roads are one thing.
Rocks or mud are something completely different.

This true and I completely respect the fact that it all depends on practical application needs. I commend you for your suggestion to new members, it is a very good suggestion, but I wonder how often it is actually considered?

For me I guess it is just the bigger picture of how society tends to lean towards and jump onto fads without practical reasoning before hand. Too many blindly following each other just because "Everyone is doing it" and jumping on the bandwagon. Then later complaining about what direction that bandwagon has truly taken them in the end.

I was just elated by the OP's statements to keep it modest. From what I see this is a not so common perspective anymore and I appreciate and support this independent individualism very much. far too many now allow compulsive society ideals to dictate their impulsive actions.

I appreciate all the feedback, I was considering the lift for all of the positive attributes for the off road application and because the oem steelies rims where rusted

I appreciate all the feedback, I was considering the lift for all of the positive attributes for the off road application and because the oem steelies where rusted and tires are pretty much crap I wanted to get it all squared away at once but I just got a hold of some liberty 16's with 50-60 percent Cooper dicoverer m+s for only 80 bucks I really didn't want to do the 16 route but for the price I will roll with it because winter is near and I lack a garage at my house which is a bummer. The rims and tires will hold me over till I figure out my plan. I didn't want to buy stock tires for the 15's and then do the suspension or visa versa. I am going to hammer it all out at once when I get a break from school and work that way i can set up the way I want it. Sometimes patients is annoying. But in the long run it will be paid for in full with satisfaction.
