Default Jumping into the Jeep game

Hey guys (and gals I guess), I picked up an XJ last week. It's a 1989 with the 4.0, 4WD, and a 5-speed manual. It has relatively low miles at 93,500, but it has already gifted us with an antifreeze puddle on the shop floor. New radiator on the way as of today. Here is a lousy picture of it (I'll post more later somewhere, if not here):

Through a little digging, I found that there were two different manual transmissions available in '89, so if anyone could tell me how to distinguish between the two I'd appreciate it. Looking forward to being involved here.

That's a good looking Jeep. Welcome to the addiction.

Member Cruiser54 is the Renix guru around here. He has a website mostly devoted to the Renix years, and you'll want to take a look at it and go through his list of tips.

Also, most questions have been discussed at some point in the past. That doesn't mean new questions aren't welcome, but you can sometimes save yourself some time by searching. Unfortunately the search function on the site is absolutely terrible, so search with Google instead using the "site:" tag, like so:

site:cherokeeforum.com manual transmission identification

(I think the second result there may have your answer.)

Adding "site:cherokeeforum.com" to the search terms restricts Google's search to just this domain name. You can use it with any site, not just this one. If you do a lot of site searches in a short amount of time, Google will give you a challenge page to make sure you're not a robot. That's normal, so just follow its instructions and you'll be back to searching in moments.

Thanks! I dug around for a little while last night but didn't try the Google trick.

Nice ride, that is low miles. Radiator isn't that big of a deal.

Actually that's my dad, but we've been there plenty. Previous owner packed grease around the steering box to keep it from leaking just long enough for us to get it home.

Planning to keep it stock at least until I get out of college, partially because the tires are almost new.

Nice score, that's in great exterior condition and low miles to boot! A little bit of elbow grease and some new parts and you'll be running around in style with the best of them.
