I'm new to this forum as well, although I've owned four Cherokee's over the last 18 years. I love Cherokee's and wish Jeep would have continued making them. I have never seen a diesel Cherokee and I'm curious whether Jeep made this motor and was it manufactured by someone else?

Nice to meet you all - BTW I'm getting around 30mpg around town at the moment, hopefully get the average up a bit after a few runs!

Hi falcon01, welcome to the forum from Fantic. Where are you across the pond? I am in Italy and here it is full of diesel ckees. From 84 to 96 they had a 4cil Renault 2.1 turbo engine and from 96 to 01 a 4cil VM Motori 2.5 turbo that would become a 5cil 3.1 for the Grand Ckee (wj).

Falcon, after a bit of googling, it seems that the 2.5D engines used in 'overseas' (guess that's us!) Cherokees is an Italian VM engine.

Ehem, yes the VM motori was born as a marine diesel engine manufacturer in 1947 and still today produces exclusively diesel engines, (similiar to British Perkins), although the marine versions MR 500/700 and MD 700 series are pretty much different from the automotive R and RA series.
Today you can find VM engines in the following cars:
Chrysler voyager
LDV maxus
Jeep cherokee
Jeep liberty
Jeep wrangler
Chevrolet captiva
London taxi

well the old ones were effectively a little delicate, especially for overheating problems, the separated heads are easy to crack and the distribution chain wears out quite fastly, other than that no particular issues, the modern ones are another story, the most fuel efficient diesels at the moment, "borrowed" technology from Fiat multijet systems...

I could have used 30mpg when gas got to $5 a gallon here in Chicago a year or so ago. Although I love the 4.0L engine in my sport, I can only squeak 20mpg on the hwy with synthetic fluids.

1£ = 1,6437$ = 1,1637€
1gallon = 3.79liters

Gasoline/Petrol/Benzina would cost 4£/6.57$ for a gallon in Italy at the moment.

Guys (you Yanks will like this!): diesel/gasoline is nearly £5 over here in the UK - and that equates to about $8 a gallon...

THIS is why we have diesel Cherokees!!!
