Default Hello from the UK

Hello from the UK. I’m not a Cherokee owner (yet!!!). Still looking around. I’ve spent the last few days reading the posts on here and am really impressed how friendly and helpful everyone is.

I’ll have loads of questions to ask in the near future but for now I’d really appreciate any advice you guys could give to someone looking to purchase their first jeep. Where to look? Autotrader, ebay, price, LPG, engine size, miles per gallon, any info to help me make my decision. I should mention at this point that my experience at “hands on” mechanics is zero so I’ve got a hell of a learning curve in front of me.

I don’t have any plans to be going off road (but that may change). It’s main purpose is for work but after a nightmare in the last 2 winters I need it to be able reliable and handle just about anything that’s chucked at it.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Ben

welcome to the site... What year xj are you looking for? What is you current car or truck?
you have to deside if you want gas( 4 or 6) or diesel... because in your country you are lucky to have both... 5spd or auto then you have to deside if you want a two door or four door... and then deside what kind of interor you want leather or cloth... and you can look on ebay, craigslist or autotrader... I assume you want to get a Jeep that has M.O.T. and is inspected... I will do a quick look for you

Just be careful. The problem with buying an XJ is that even when you have sold it and THINK you have moved on to another car, the thoughts of having another XJ will be lingering in the back of your mind!

Welcome from across the pond (Texas!), if you can, I'd say get a 2000 or 01, electronic ignition (less maintenance, more reliable) and a sheet metal hatch, not fiber glass... although that's on any 97+. Looking forward to having you here! I started in the same place as you, I barely knew what an axle was, but now I've removed my sway bar, replaced my coil rack and plugs, installed a bumper and winch, wired extra lighting, and a CB... so I've learned ALOT just by owning an XJ... your in for tons of fun. Soon you'll be talking to it, weirding out everyone else in the parking lot... just like me and Chery. (Chery is my XJ) And 3II3nwood is right, I still miss my old 2WD XJ... even though I traded it for a 4x4 XJ.

Hey Ben-North -East, hi from Northern Virginia. Welcome, I'm new to CF too. Where in the NE part of the UK are you? I lived in the UK (Harrogate) for a couple of years. My third Jeep (a late 90s black Grand Cherokee Limited) was bought and driven in the UK. With the price of gas over there, you may want to look for a diesel or one with a natural gas conversion. Good luck, and happy wheeling.

Hey Rooster - how's it going? thanks for the reply.

Decisions decisons desicions! Going on the direction petrol prices are heading (and the chances of them coming down) I should really be looking at a 2.5 ltr diesel. It has to be manual transmission (I've only ever driven an automatic once and nearly stomped my foot through the floor!). Four door would be nice. Not to bothered about the interior. Current car is a 2.2 Vectra (petrol) - don't ask - it's been a nightmare

Hi Gee - thanks for the reply. I did see a post somewhere on here about jargon busting. Im guessin the 4.0 is the engine size? Man a 4ltr would be great. And with a little arm twisting id go for it but I think Id need an interview with my bank manager every time I wanted to drive it over to he pumps!

I6??? is that lift?

Hi Rockhead - Harrogate is spitting distance from me. In fact I just got picked up by a recovery truck just outside Wetherby
