Default Hello all can you help.

I just joined the forum and I would like to know if anyone could help me. My first vehicle 24 years ago was a Jeep Cherokee until my Dad decided he wanted his Jeep back and bought me a camaro. I have missed it since. So I am trying to find a Jeep Cherokee ( married hav 2 kids need 4 doors). I found a 97 Grand Cherokee Limited on craigslist. I have to drive an hour and a half to see it so I made an appointment for Sunday at 2pm. I am going to paste the ad.

This is a 97 Grand Cherokee with 167,000 and a 5.2 l 318 V8.Leather and every option Jeep had at the time but w/out sunroof. It has New Brakes all around , new wheel bearings, drag link, steering stabilizer, and new water pump. It also has a newer rear end with only 90,000 on it and is filled with royal purple gear oil.
This Jeep does have a Full 3 inches of lift with 265/75/16 (equal to 32" tires) and shocks meant for it.

The Bad-
Due to the lift needs an after market Track bar ( prefer adjustable)
Needs driver side ball joints and bushings

AND a weak fuel pump( Not to bad in price I can get it for $107.00 if wanted) It will start and run anywhere you want but dont let sit to long or you'll be sitting until it wants to fully prime and start. I only drive it to and from work and when its not giving any issues have no problem running to Kansas City and back.

I just need it to go due to the itch to get back into a sports car and hit up the local drag track. I am asking 1500 but am pretty firm. Thanks

ME AGAIN

I have been searching your forum getting hints and tips, but how can I figure out if it is the fuel pump or bad compression or ??? when I am far from home in a small town I do not know. Or am I being paranoid?

Thanks in advance!
METAZ

p.s. hope to have a Jeep soon.

Can't help too much myself, but Welcome from Texas, sounds pretty good for $1500 for me, but I'm not all that knowledgeable about all that... anyone else?

I've never seen a Grand Cherokee at browns or anyplace else that was worth a crap, I would get an XJ, but that's just because they are awesome!

the 107$ fuel pump is odd... since it has an extended crank just the pump won't fix it. it needs the regulator which is in the body of the pump... unless its different in that year. mine was 280$ pump and body. part alone. just a heads up. but it looks ok. no way to check compression without doing a full test.

labor on ball joints can be pricey too...

its not a bad price. is it worth it to you? i would probably offer 1k$ and see what he says. cash talks...

Thanks for the info. He texted me tonight and said "it would not start tonight fuel pump is done, if you want to cancel I understand". I texted him back and suggested he put in a fuel pump. He said he did not want to sell it if were not running so he was going to drop the tank tonight and put in a new pump.

I told him to let me know what happens.

Thanks,
METAZ

Thanks for all the welcome. I bought a 98 grand cherokee tonight. it needs a little work but has plenty of life left. I am sure I will be asking plent of questions. Here is the first one. The gas guage does not work. I plan on checking wires and connections before I start replacing things. The guy I bought it from thinks the whole fuel pump assembly should be replaced. Any thoughts?
Thanks
METAZ
P.S. It needs tires what size can I do without a lift or damaging anything?

Congrats on finding one, it looks nice. welcome to the site!

the fuel gauge issue from what I have seen is mostly the sending unit in the tank. but not always and should be checked first. wish i had good info on this for you but i am sure someone has dealt with this on your model more then me.

this section now applys to you, and has a TON of good info to look threw and search to answer a lot of your questions. This site has a bunch of good info. GrandCherokeesection
