Greetings from Cork in Ireland - TD Question
Hi Guys,
Thought I'd join the forum as you are knowledgable bunch of chaps and I'm planning on starting a wee Cherokee project.
I've usually had HiLux Surf's or Ford Explorers over the last few years but was given a 1995 Limited SE HO Cherokee and truth be told I'm kind of hooked. Mine is a 1995 with 195,000 miles on the clock and despite a few bumps and some rust and a bit of wear and tear, the beast is going rather well.
Anyway, the project I'm undertaking in Apr is to have a nice XJ 2.5 Turbo Diesel (around 1999- 2001 model) and to turn it into a bit of an overlander ready to drive to Morocco in August.
I've never driven the Cherokee TD and I just want to know about the 4x4 system. The 4.0 Petrol has a Full time system which is good for a mix of slippery stuff but if you so felt like it you can use sealed roads as well, is this the case with the TD? Does it have Selec-Trac or is it only the Command trac (i.e. Part time and low ratio).
Any tips or opinions about the best model to get, sport vs limited, advice on Long range tanks etc would be most welcome.
Cheers Chaps

I am not sure about the Euro spec Jeeps, but welcome from WA. Hopefully someone else will know.

welcome! There was two transfer cases offered for the XJ. The 242 transfer case that has the 4wh, 4wh full time and 4lo with 2hi. The 231 has only 4wh, 4lo and 2hi. The last one should only be used when needed. From what I have found even the Euro spec XJ's had these two transfer cases also.

Welcome for Texas. I would get a sport. I'm guessing that the limited would weigh more (more options on it) and if your planning on driving it to Morocco it would cost more in gas. As for the gas tank there is a way (I think) to raise the breather hoses or something like that. Mabe google that one. But here is a link to a long range gas tank.

Nice one lads looks like I have the answers! great links regarding the fuel tanks too.
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated.
Now time to change the thermostat on the 4.0 that should leave a few nicely scuffed knuckles!
Cheers
