I'm convinced, the XJ is the only way to go. They are cheap, durable, and everywhere. Can't wait to get mine. Anyone have a preferred year between 1987-2001? Any input would be greatly appreciated, can't wait to be a Jeeper.

1997-1999. More HP than previous years, new style interior. In 2000 they came with a low pinion (weak) Dana30 front axle and a crack prone 0331 head.

I gotta agree with the above posts . I had always heard the same things about the 00'-01 models , the LP, and the 0331 head. Unfortunately I just acquired an 00' , but it was free , and has only 48k orig miles , completely rust free and was babied by my father . I can work around those above issues I sposse. I had intended to eventually purchase an XJ, and would have opted for a 98'-99'. Good luck.

Nice! I like the color. Don't see those BBS style type wheels much anymore either.

Good score!

Welcome! as far as year recommendations, that depends. I like the idea of at least a driver side airbag(1996+) since my XJ is 98% on road. However if I were to be building a primarily off road mongoloid rip snorting trail truck I'd probably look for an early 1990's. But I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose, the XJ is a great platform no matter the year!
