Pretty new here. But been looking for info for awhile now. Finally got my first xj to shift on its own. Previous owner broke the bell houseing and took a chunk of the transmission body with it. He must of thought it was a good idea. (*******). Well I pick up a 98 aw4 for $125 (xj is a 97). Had no clue there was much of a difference. Was I wrong. I've change plenty of 700r4's and turbo 350s and 400. Long story short had the solenoids hook up wrong after 2 months of a headache. Shift perfect now.

Yea it can be a giant pain when dealing with other peoples messes. (Why I would NEVER buy a lifted jeep unless I was going to use it for parts). Welcome to the forum!

Ya this one just has aluminum spacers up front. With stock rear. So the front end sits higher than the back. Looks goofy if u ask me, for now at least.
