First jeep.....2001 XJ with a rod knock, in Pa
Hey guys.
Got frustrated with all the $4-5K XJ's for sale around here, so I jumped on a super clean 2001 with 107k miles and a rod knock for $1500 this past weekend.
I know the 0331 head has got to go, so I'm planning on a new casting for $500. Expect to drop the pan to inspect the bottom end this weekend.
If the crank is toast, I might just spring for a 4.6 stroker setup..... kits start around $900?
I'm experienced with engine builds, having rebuilt a few 60's Buick GS's and even some SAAB turbos..... so the hot rodder in me likes the 4.6 option.
Quick question....is a stroker build that much more expensive than a stock rebuild? I'd like to keep the build cost under $2k or so.
I got lots of reading to do.....nice site you folks have here.

I've wondered the very same question, i too eventually want to do a stroker. Personally your probably only gonna rebuild it once so why not enjoy the stroker for years to come. Anyways welcome to Cherokee Forum and good luck with your motor.

Thanks for the welcome!
Dropped the oil pan yesterday to investigate the noise. Found a few pieces of aluminum from the #2 piston shirt. Popped off the rod caps and the bearings look mint. Surprised the piston noise sounded so much like a rod knock!
Gonna pull the engine today, disassemble, and start measuring and inspection.
It's a given I should replace all 6 pistons ($150). If I have to rebore the cylinders, I might as well go with the stroker forged ones from KB (+$300).
Additional cost for the stroker would be for decking block (maybe), a 4.2 crank, and a set of larger injectors.
I should go for it. Hope I can find a nice crank.
