Default Cherokees are Great Fun!

Hey gang!

I'm a newbie to the forum and just want to say hello. I've had an 87 and 98 (both 4.0L) Laredo for about 1 year now and can definitely say I'm sorry I didn't get one sooner. I find both are very capable vehicles in stock trim (Just added BFG A/T's to both for extra grip). I plan on building up the 87 so it can better handle the scree and shale on our property in Windsor, NY.
The 87 was a $500 bucket of bolts (only 140K when I got her). I have been working on a cooling system upgrade, the wiring harness (a birds nest of horrible mistakes from the last owner and burned out wires due to a leaky sun roof) and floorpan repair. She is currently my workhorse at our land.

My latest escapade was in breaking off the lower rear shock stud on my Wife's 98.

Best to all,

AllSeeingEye

when the stud on the top of the rear shocks brake, just about everytime one is gonna brake. instead of trying to drill it out, and use an extractor, which takes hours, and doesn't usually get you anywhere, here's the trick

screw it. use an air hammer with a narrow punch bit, or if you don't have access to that, you can hammer it by hand. but just punch that stud out so it goes out the top, basically brake it out. now you have a whole where the stud should be. and don't get freaked out here, there's a whole from the factory, but they weld the stud in the whole, so it brakes the welded part out clean. get yourself a nut and bolt and put it in instead of a stud. sometimes you have to use a magnet to feed the nut in, sometimes you can hold it with a wrench, sometimes a gun will just zip it down with out holding the other end.

takes about 20 mins, instead of hours. make sense?
