My love affair with Jeeps began back in the middle 80s when I was in the Army assigned as a Game Warden MP at Fort Benning Georgia . We had a fleet of CJs a couple of early Cherokees including a Cherokee Chief , a step side pick up reserved for stray dogs, cats and rattlesnakes (had a huge cage in the bed and a tranquilizer gun/ u don’t even know how much fun that is!) and a Dodge Power wagon that would go anywhere. We left that out on the ranges because the knobby tires did not work well on the pavement. I spent bazillions of hours riding the tank trails and back roads of Ft Benning. Mostly checking hunting and fishing licenses but occasionally chasing down alligator poachers and deer spot lighters. Got into a high speed chase once and lost my CJ on a curve and flipped it down a hill about a dozen times. A passing farmer helped me flip it back over and other than a broken gumball machine type police light there was no damage to the jeep. I received a cut on the head from my flashlight bouncing off my head several times as we rolled down the hill though.
Anyway, after a divorce and my kids all out on there own I’ve finally been able to purchase my own jeep and did so about 2 months ago. I found a 96 Cherokee with less then 60,000 miles on it and very little rust. The roof where it meets the windshield seems to be the worst of it. I had been looking for about a year and just couldn’t pass this one up. As far as I know it’s totally stock. I have big plans for this vehicle and I’m not so sure where to start, yet. Mostly spending time reading the forums and learning as much as I can. My mouth waters when I see these jeeps with big tires, roof racks, winches and big bumpers. Even though I’m driving this daily I do look forward to getting it more trail ready and getting it off road. For now I’m just happy to finally be in one after dreaming about it for so long.
My name is Martin and I live in Liverpool NY, just north of the village. I’m retired from the Army with 25 years, most of them in the Infantry and a few as an MP. Presently I work as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I’m certified as a PT, TRX instructor, GRIT coach and working on my Crossfit cert.
