He definitely needs to make a kit for the under hood light, I wanted it but since he didn't sell it, I bought the appropriate LED light on eBay, so much light to work in there at night! I don't have a pic but I can get one tonight if anybody is curious

The easiest light to use under the hood is going to be any type of 44mm loop LED with twisted loops. It's the same light that goes in the 98-01 dome light.
What I recommend, is mounting a weatherproof LED strip under the hood and soldering the wires to the contacts after the switch - more light, likely longer lasting, and way more light than any single LED will give. Plus, there are parts that will do this for under $10 shipped. Unfortunately, I don't have any.
--------- Misc ramblings below (light related)
To be honest, that center dome light has been hit-and-miss. Some have last nearly two years, but many of them go bad around the 9 to 12 month mark. I expect that putting them in the engine compartment will reduce that even more.
I do have a new light on order to replace the current style of dome light. It's going to be relatively expensive (my cost is almost 5x the cost of the existing light), but it should do better in high temperatures. We'll see.

I've got some weatherproof LED strips I was planing on wiring up as well! I'd have thought the LED's would be fine with the temps? Hmm. maybe I'll just remove the incandescent bulb and put the strips leads across the open slot.

Any number of things should work. I did all the testing, but never actually installed it. I heated the LED strip with a heat gun until the adhesive started to burn and I stopped there. Not sure how it would hold up under long term abuse, but it dealt with short term pretty well. The pic below is something I pulled off walmart's site. Searching for LED Strip CoB DLR Fog Lamp will yield a number of the same and similar.

Yep I bought 2 recommended by someone else on here from eBay. It was like $2 free shipping from China...I know I'm a bad person...but it was just so cheap. They're sitting on my workbench.

Huh, that bulb looks different than these(Must have changed in '97?):
Might have to click here for full res
My jeep didn't come factory with the under hood light but it did have the wire harness for it, so I picked up a under hood light off a ZJ. Could explain the difference. Anyways, don't want to hijack the thread but figured I'd help throw the idea out there for maybe a future LED under hood light to sell
I'm leaving town tomorrow around noon or so and won't be back until July 20th. Sorry for the short notice, but anyone wanting lights soon will have to let me know before noon mountain time on July 1st.
On the bright side, when I get back I should(!) have new dome lights (84-01) and new cargo lights (84-97) as well as new rear overhead and cargo lights for the WJ.
I just got mine in Today!! Very fast shipping etc. Install was a breeze and they look fantastic. My driver side vanity lights flickr when opening the flap so I need to work on that but they all work great.

Maybe try running the dimmer switch through its range of motion. It could be wiring, the dimmer switch contacts, or the switch that turns the lights on and off... could also be that the LED is loose, but unless there were oversized lights there before, that's unlikely. LED could be bad. If you want, try it on the passenger side and let me know if it does it there. Sometimes the metal end caps can come loose during install. They're held in place by compression, solder, and a bit of hope.
Forgive me if this has already been asked/answered in the thread (I didn't read all 31 pages): does the OEM lamp dimmer still work when the dash lights are replaced with LED's?

The dimmer will no longer work after LEDs are replaced. That said, I've had only two or three complaints regarding brightness. I know two of those exchanged for a different color.
If you do decide to try a set and don't like it, I'll and give a full refund and email a return shipping label. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about the time it takes to install.

Ya I did that. Its not the lights, its gotta be the switch that turns off or on because the lights function if i open flap about half way and turn off when fully opened, then when i close about half way they turn back on. Ill fix the switch.
