We are in North Carolina. We do online sales for our company. I just saw your quote from the shop. If you are considering a lift. Now would be the time. For $200 more you get springs, shackles, control arms, shocks etc.
For the same money you could do a 3" lift kit with new spring packs. Feel free to give us a call. We open at 8am EST.

If by "left u-joint" they mean the drivers side front axle u-joint, I would ask them to replace the passenger side as well. Those are things that should be replaced in pairs.
In regards to working on your jeep, now is the time to learn. Jeeps are pretty easy to work on. There are lots of write-ups out there on how to tackle just about everything on a XJ. Save you some money in the process, and a whole lot of great knowledge. But again, I understand, just throwing it out there. I know how parents can be. I was a junior in high school one time.

And yea. I've always wanted to learn and I think it would be cool to do it my self and very rewarding. I'll have to talk to them.
