Default Yet another bushwacker thread...

OK, so I've got an opportunity to buy a set of used (in good shape) original Bushwackers for $100. My goal is to run 285x75r16 (~33.2x11.5r16) tires on 16x8 rims with 4.5" of backspacing. My XJ is currently running a 3.5" RE superflex kit with no perceptible sagging springs. First question, do the original Bushwackers provide the same amount of additional (vertical) clearance as the new flat-style flares? Second question, will I be able to fit the tire/rim combo without additional spacers & shackles for more lift? Third question, will the tires look goofy with 4.5" of backspacing? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

The bushwacker cutout flares in combination with trimming your fenders should provide enough room for 33s. Not sure if they provide as much clearance as the flat fender, but when I had them I was able to stuff my tire up in there.

The backspacing might be an issue. Don't think it will look weird, but it may rub at full lock. I've tried to run wheels with 4.5-5" of backspacing and it was necessary to run spacers or get new wheels.

the flat flares have the same amount of room as cut out flares. they just don't go up the fender as much for mounting purposes. you still cut the same amount of fender. i'm pretty sure anyways.

as for the tire, you will be inside the flare a bit, may look a little odd. i have 33's on mine right now with 3.75 backspace. the tires are inside the flare about an eighth of an inch on each side.

i have no rubbing issues with about 6 inches of lift height.

my avatar is an older pic.

OK, thanks for the replies. Guess I'm gonna jump on those flares and get my tires mounted up and see what happens. It sounds like with 4.5" backspacing and 1" spacers the tires will be right in line with the outer edge of the fender flare. Maybe i'll go that route, I just got the rims (used) for a great deal so I want to keep them. Plus used 16x8s are a PITA to find.
