Default yes another lift question but i did my homework!!

hey all! ok so after spending alot of time looking a pictures of xjs with different lifts/tire combos and reading lots of entries on different threads i have a question that i know is kinda a to each there own thing but considering my jeep is a cross country dd/ww i need some stright foward answeres lol.

yes or no to needing a sye on a 3.5 inch or 4.5inch lift with 31s? my xj is a plane lardeo 4.0 auto no tow package or skids with a np 231. i had a 96 grand with the 4.0 aw4 242? that i did a re 4.5 super flex kit and no sye. can i do the same with my xj? i know the 3.5 inch lift is fine for what i do with my jeep but i feel that the 4.5 with 31s is my perfect lift combo weather zj or xj. i just dont have the money to do a sye nor do i plan on lifting my jeep above 4.5inches or doing any biger than 33s so i want to make shure that i dont lift it more that what stock drive line parts can take. i will be replacing the control arms with adj ones and using an adj track bar.

Mine is lifted 8" and I don't need a SYE kit on the white 97 Grand Cherokee. Didn't have a slip yoke eliminator on my 1984 Cherokee either before I switched Transfer cases. You can check before you buy one by sticking the front yoke into the rear of transfer case with the rear of shaft disconnected and hanging, jack up the frame to full droop on the rear differential, if the rear of the driveshaft is hanging a couple of inches lower than the rear diff. yoke, you don't need one although its good insurance against breakage but with 4" lift you won't have to have it. No one can tell you deffently yes or deffently no. Every rig is different, and every lift is different. I can tell you that my 97 w/ a 3" needed a 1" tc drop. It does seam that the 97-01's are more prone to driveline vibes. You sorta just have to put on the lift and see how it goes.

I put one in when I did my 4.5in. The yoke was slid off the tcase about halfway. I didn't even want to drive it like that.

Yea I kno every rig is different I was just hoping it would be something that was the same amongst xjs lol. I think ill just do a 3.5 inch kit and go from there. Ill end up with a tnt long arm once I get the money. Bumpers armor and getting it mechanicaly stout are the first things to be done along with a growth spert.

agreed the SYE is a bit more important than long arms especially when you can get them for under $200...

lol sorry i should have worded stuff better. when i do get the LA ill get the sye and drive shafts but right now i cant afford nor do i want to have to get an sye so i wanna stay with a lift that will not require me to get one...my bad lol

You may need one with a 3.5" lift and you may not with a 4.5" lift. Every XJ is different, unfortunately the only way to know is to install your lift send see what happens. I'm fighting vibes at around 4.5" rear lift. I'm not sure yet if I need an SYE or not. Going to see if I can fix it with shims, since my driveline angle is pretty off.

If you don't want to chance needing the SYE I'd start off with the 3.5" and later on just add spacers and shackles to get 4.5". If this is the RE 3.5" kit you're looking at you should know that it really gives at least 4"of lift. I'm basically runing the same lift, at least as far as height is concerned.

with a TC drop and degree shims on the rear axle you "should" be good.

I didn't need a sye with my 4.5 in lift but it had al's and the leafs were sagging pretty bad. Never had any vibes but like it's been said they're all different. Put it on and see how it works you'll know whether u want the sye after u drive it.
