Default XJ Tranny replacable part

Hi Folks,
My tranny is emanating noise in all gears except gear no:4 . Can anyone enlighten me what are the parts inside the transmission that I must change to bring her back to glory? Thanks!

You really don't change parts inside a tranny-assuming its a AW4, If its making noise from inside. Drive it down to your local tranny shop and let them test drive it an render an opinion. Its free.

If it's a manual trans, it sounds like bad bearings on the countershaft. 4th gear should be 1:1. This means in all the other gears, the power flows from the engine to the input shaft, down to whatever gear is selected on the countershaft, back to the main shaft and the to the output shaft into the transfer case. In 4th (or whatever gear is 1:1) the input shaft is coupled directly to the main shaft, bypassing the countershaft. Maual transmissions have a lot of parts in them but they a re relatively simple to work on. You need basic hand tools plus a good set of snap ring pliers and sometimes access to a shop press. Take photos of each step of the disassembly and keep everything in order so you know which parts go back where in in what order. It helps to have a beach towel-sized work bench or table to lay the parts out on.

just wondering but i heard 4 speed trannys are simple to work on and require nothing more that basic tools but 5 speeds and 6 speeds are much more complicated and requires special tools to hold certain gears while you disassemble?
