Default xj alternator

hey up guys got an 4.0 xj 98 model with 170k ,since we bought it last year it had a noise on it we thought it was belt pullie (dry bearing) but when we was out in it yesterday the check light came on and the volt metre dropped off ,no reading at all so stopped the car started it straight back up and all was well again then after a mile or so it dropped off again so we just carried on home ,stopped the car when got home had a look under bonnet again belt was still in tacked started back up and alll was fine again with volt metre working ,am i right thinking alternator no good ,so thinking pullie is ok and alternatoe noisey ,cheers karl

Clean your battery terminals and the connectors on the alternator. Test to be sure your battery is 12+ volts. Then start it up and check the voltage at the battery again. It should be at least 14 volts. If clean contacts don't stop the intermittant 'no volts' condition, then probably your alternator bracket wants a new alternator bolted to it

Thank you but when I went to take alternator off this morning I noticed that the plastic pullie had calasped cheers karl
