Would you install a snorkel to improve air flow?
I have a couple of friends who are all in on the "snorkels = better air flow" argument; one already has a Safari Snorkel installed on his Taco, and the other is taking the former's advice and installing one on his XJ. The likelihood that either of them will ever need a snorkel due to water is slim (which they both admit), so they claim that they want snorkels because they somehow get cleaner air to their engines (one of them argues that it helps get his air intake "above the dust" when he's behind other rigs on the trail).
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the snorkel aesthetic. Plus, I want to take a very minimalist approach to modifying my XJ, so if a part/accessory/modification doesn't have a specific - and necessary - application, it's not going on my rig. However, if there is a legitimate argument to be made for the better/cleaner air flow idea, I could get on board with a snorkel despite my aversion to the appearance.
What's your stance on this?

No way I would put on a snorkel...period.
If I am somewhere that I really need a snorkel, I am in the wrong place.
With all the bends and frictional resistance, not sure how you could really argue it is better and mean it

The Spectra shown isn't a cowl system. I thought I heard Thor was making theirs again but I can't enter their site.
Here are some pics of the cowl systems. Some are homemade.

Not sure if I need either one, to be honest. Is the difference in the temperature and/or "cleanliness" of the incoming air through either system that much of an improvement over the stock setup?

Just ordered the THOR last night.
I'm doing it to make room not for any performance gains.
...Plus I want my engine to sound more tractor. lol

I have seen some guys take the cowl intake one step further and put a mushroom top on the cowl, like the humvees. That mushroom top is a dust separator, that is what you want to keep the dust out of your air filter. You see them on off road forklifts also. They catch a lot of dust.
Installing a snorkel for a performance gain is akin to installing a fart can on a Honda. Sure it improves power (to some degree), but I would rather not look like a douche.

Did you use the link in post #6? I just tried that link again. Still can't get past the first page.
I'm not interested in one but others may be. If you would post some contact info please. Pic of it would appreciated to.

It then redirects you to a different link. There are a couple of coupon codes for a free pre filter but they don't seem to work.

Had it with your link and Greenz but can't get it consistently. My so called server is the problem. Most of the time I can't even download pics let alone videos.
