IMO just the fact that if and when it breaks it just falls to the ground makes it worth it...IMO. But I'm sure someone with more experience on the topic will help ya out

Steel cable works fine, I bought my XRC8 with the cable because it was cheaper. When it needs to be replaced I'm going with a rope though, just seems a little safer to me.

I have two winches and both have steel cable. I would like to use rope myself for the lighter weight and the reduced risk of injury during breakage but I use my winches for work and I HAVE to have the steel cable due to abrasion. The rope just won't hold up near as well when it's rubbing on other surfaces.

Tried and true steel cable will work just fine. Know the limitations of the winch, and recover intelligently, and you'll be fine.
