Winch bumper d-ring mounts

Winch bumper d-ring mounts
I am wondering, I am going to use either 1/4" of maybe 3/8" to make the "cradle" for the winch. I have seen everyone say don't surface weld the d-ring mounts. Soooo, How thick of metal should I use for them? 1/2" or bigger?1"?
