you must be getting deaf, might be a good time to start learning sign language

Spectre had two models. The model for the early years looped back around to the driver's side because there was junk in the way on the passenger side. The 97+ XJs have less junk in the way on the passenger side (except that you have to relocate your under-hood light if you have one), and that side is preferable because it's completely covered. The "vent" on that side is fake; it has solid sheet metal underneath. In contrast, where that earlier model attaches on the driver's side, it's completely open right there. Not only do you have a potential to ingest water, but you also increase the amount of crap that makes it through the screen into the filter.

If you can fit the passenger side intake on your machine, you really should. It's better protection for the motor.

The growl is not the problem. There's a giant sucking sound on a cold start. After a few moments it dies down a bit to a low sucking sound. You only really get the growl from the motor at WOT, but that's actually part of the appeal. You can definitely hear a lot more of what your engine is doing.

It probably does. But personally I'd rather live with the noise than have that hole more exposed to the elements.

Then you will have NO problem with the noise this thing makes. After the suck dies down from cold start, I doubt you'll even be able to hear it. I have mine on a 4.6L stroker with no lift and stock tires, and out on the highway the suck blends into the background wind noise so I don't hear it at all.

Nice work. I need to do something like that. I have dunked my 90 in some puddles that were deeper than they looked a couple times. I've gotten lucky so far.

I just wanted drop in on this old thread to let you all know the original cowl induction kit has returned. I got in touch with Mike at THOR (Trail Head Off Road) about 8 months ago. He told me that sales went down and he stopped listing the product. I was happy to help him market his new rendition, (marketing is my background) and so from there we worked together to develop a 3rd generation kit for 91-01 XJs. It is a one piece construction, and you may have seen the install on BleepinJeeps Channel. I will be creating a writeup for the newly available cowl induction kit and have a code for you guys to use to get a free item too. This has gone from a 1 to a 2 man operation, so please be understanding in the distribution process.

I just installed a THOR Gen 3 intake kit on my 98 xj. The quality of the kit is great, easy install, and it sounds AWESOME!!!
