Default When is a transmission cooler a good idea?

I was just wondering when or if a externally mounted trans cooler would be a good thing to add on a DD/ trail vehicle. From what i have read on here the AW4 has a problem with putting off alot of heat and i know that heat is a trans killer. Was thinking like a b&m super cooler or something or would i be wasting my money? Any input would be a great help

A transmission cooler is always a good idea.

Don't XJs already have a trans cooler on it? I have a stock 95 sport and I have lines running from the trans, through a cooler in front of the radiator, then back into the trans.

Yes they have a Tranny cooler biult into the radiator. Its not a bad idea to put an after market outside the radiator though. It will help your Tranny run cooler that the normal 190 - 210 range of the cherokees.

Depending on the package you might have a stock external. Mine has one mounted in front of the rad.

If you have the bumper off it will be pretty obvious if you have one or not. It will be right in front of the radiator. My 92 didn't come with one and it didn't have a towing package either. I grabbed a stock one off of my parts 90 and it swapped in very easy. The front portion of the "frame" already had the holes to install it.

mine has the tow package and it has a small one in the front and also goes threw the rad. i removed the factory onew in the front and blocked off the rad and ran it straight from the trans to a derale that i mounted in the front and then back to the trans to make run cooler then the temp that the coolant is running at and have not had any problems and it was easy to do.

My 92 has the stock in the rad and 2 external. We get real hot down here in the desert and i used to tow with it a few years back when it was my main ride.

Yes it can be a good idea to mount a trans cooler, and use it as an engine oil cooler, but mostly I guess since we were discussing installing a trans cooler on an auto equipped Cherokee that was what I made the statement about.

Along the same lines, what is the consenses on.... Does the Trans cooler help warm a cold transmission after start-up on cold mornings?

About 6mo ago I blew the seals in my trans and that was enough of a sign to upgrade. I had a smaller(stock?) trans cooler but upgraded to the Hayden 405 and it has worked awesome. My advice is to get the biggest cooler you can fit.
