Default Wheel sizes?

Why would you choose different size rims? What are the most common applications of 15", 16" and 17" rims? I'm trying to figure out what to buy for my new jeep and just don't know why I would buy which size.

I'm going to be mainly dd'ing it with a 3" lift. I'd like to have 31" tires on it, but don't know how big of wheels to get so that the tires don't get spongy from being so tall.

Sorry for being a noob.

for 31's, just stay with 15" rims.

stay with 15s the more rubber between the rim and things that bend rims on the trail the better

i've got a 3.5in lift on my dd with 31X10.50 BFG All-Terrain A/T's on 15in steel rocker rims. runs great on the road and still looks mean, ive done some serious four wheeling with it as well. (6/10 is my best so far)

and if you choose to size up you could easily keep the 15s up to 35in tire without too much trouble.

I live in snow country and bought a set of Liberty aluminum 16" wheels. I run 31X10.50-15's in the summer and 245-75-16's in the winter. Much narrower and exactly the same height at the 31X10.50's. You can also go to a 265, which is a 32", quite easily and what I will probably run after the 246's wear out. 285's are 33", but are getting too wide for the narrow stock wheels.
