just about any brand is good for a trail cb. you don't really need much bling. your money is better spent on the antenna.

i use a cobra 29 but others are uniden and president.
with that i have a fiberglass 102" whip mounted to my rear bumper.

perfectly tuned, it works great. and no worries about tree branches knocking it off.

I'm running a uniden bearcat pro 538w. I thought it was decent but not really. Was only $54 I'm going to upgrade to a cobra 25 or 29.

As for the antenna, I've got a Wilson 5/8 wave length 4' fiberglass on a heavy duty spring. Tuned pretty well with an swr of 1.2:1

I think the little Uniden Pro 510XLs are great radios. A lot of the old time base station operators use them in their trail rigs. They can be modified and tuned up. They are small and cheap. I have used a Cobra 29LTD, some radio shack mobile, and some other old Cobra and none of them talked like the 510 I have now.

I have read good things about the 510 and seen a couple videos on youtube how to modify them. Though I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have all the right tools I still don't feel comfortable modifying electrical systems or components. I think I'll stick with a cobra or even a galaxy. Id rather spend a little more on a good radio than mess with anything electrical to decrease engine noise, static, etc etc.
