So my friend asked if turbocharging/supercharging a 1989' jeep cherokee rock crawler is possible? any ideas and any problems it could cause and possible pro's that could make it worthwhile?

Be ready for some interesting remarks to this question.. Haha.. But I'd say a small turbo seems to be the way..

If it's actually a rock crawler I wouldn't since turbos and superchargers need to rev a bit to make boost and crawling is done at low rpms. Plan on some engine work as well other wise you'll blow it apart.

Apparently... A lot of heat is generated by chargers and at lower speed there can be an issue with that. Plus ya gotta do fab work half the time, reprogram computer, beef up coolant system, and the air and fuel delivery will probably need upgrades... So idk, seems easier to just work on freeing up existing ponies, as opposed to cramming more in there. Instead, consider regearing to a 4.10 or 4.56. Also get a good cold air intake, and make sure all ignition/fuel delivery components are good. New and upgraded plugs, wires, cap, rotor, injectors, AC delete and underdrive pulleys if they make em for your jeep, better exhaust... To name a few.. Good luck.

There is a company that makes a super charger for the 4.0... if I remeber though it was kinda pricey.

As for the turbo... search on Naxja and pirate about turboing the 4.0. Lots of info out there. Lot of tech. There are some ppl getting some serious ponies out of stroked/turboed 4.0's. AT the same time you can get the same power out of a stock/tuned 5.3 and let alone if you supercharge it as well.
