Default Vacuum Canister Question

Got a quick and simple question for you guys, just in the case the vacuum ball in my '91 XJ turns out to be the culprit behind my "only the defroster works" issue. If the vacuum ball is leaking, has anyone ever just made their own? By the looks of it, the ball itself simply holds vacuum from the engine... no valves or anything, just a hose running to it from the intake that branches off at the cruise control servo and HVAC controls. I figured some pcv, cap ends, cement, a drill, and some fittings would do nicely, and then relocate it into the engine bay.

Noone has ever tried this for the XJ? I've seen some Chevelle forums where guys did something like this and it seemed to work well.

i dont see why that wouldnt work. just make sure you have enough volume inside the canister. shouldnt cost anymore than a couple bucks at the store.

That's what I figured... Plus, I can go from a room consuming ball to a long tube that will sit along the inner wall of the engine bay. And AFAIK, the stock vacuum ball doesnt have any valves or anything. It's just a sealed container with a fitting that connects to a hose.
