I thought about doing a china turbo off ebay but the consensus on most forums is to they would trust a oem one with 100,000 miles more than a ebay one. Plus the yards around me only charge 50 bucks for a turbo.

some dynos i saw for the 4.0 stock were around 140 150 to the wheels. so boosted realistically maybe 180 190?

as for the turbo itself Ill go back to the yard this week, do some digging and find out what is there.

If you need more power, put a 4.6 stroker in it and call it a day.

The XJ is very low on the list of vehicles I would turbo, youre opening a can of worms here and it will likely underwhelm your expectations.

Then again, its your vehicle to do with as you please. Just my .02

Its really that easy, honestly - if you can weld and fab a little (tubing, nothing really that structural), it can be done fairly cheaply as well as demonstrated.

The problem is an LS1, bone stock will make as much power as a boosted 4.0, and a built LS1 (N/A) will easily match or exceed the power of a built 4.7 turbo stroker. The Jeep I6 just is not a good platform to make lots of power.
And the LS just has tons more room to grow

Though, 350-450 whp is arguably more than enough in an XJ chassis

If you are just looking to do a junkyard turbo setup for fun - then go for it!! Buy some cheap tubing, go raid the junkyard for a good turbo and get to building. Tuning will need to be done with a 7th injector but I am pretty sure the AEM FIC should do that no problem, or the split-second controller is pretty popular as well.
I helped my friend bolt a junkyard turbo on his Volvo 240 from other random Volvos at the JY. Thing is still slow as hell, but its a blast to drive and was a really rewarding build (even more after we welded the rear diff)

EDIT:
And on the subject of cheap turbos, I went for a semi-cheap option for my mustang, Master Power, and another guy I know went for a dirt cheap china turbo.
Mine held up perfectly fine at 20 PSI, and the first time he cranked his above 19 psi it started leaking oil like a sieve

I would be afraid to run a Chinese turbo, lol. Get a cheap OEM or get a reputable "budget" turbo that won't explode on you

EDIT:
Also, Dyno results incase you are curious as to what others have made

I have not run a complete China turbo only a couple center housings and both have performed above stock demand. There is some luck in those purchases. There was a time when precision turbos would fail in a few thousand miles of anyone remembers that. The next one that seems to be taking a foot hold for reliability is cx racing.

As I said im not looking to swap engines or build mine into a stroker. (not that it wouldnt be cool) I want to keep the I6 and just bolt on some good power. I know it wont turn it into a monster but if i can add 50 hp maybe I think it would be awesome.

I really just want to this for the idea of having a turbo jeep and because I think it will be awesome and a fun project to undertake. Ill probably stay away from the ebay turbos and just find a good junkyard one. I have a ton of information now and I think have a developed plan now. Ill update this thread once i start getting things but like i said its probably not gonna happen till the end of summer as I am just getting parts now.
